Through the conversation of three young men before the street stalls on a street corner, a traffic accident happened suddenly nearby, the director wanted to sketch a multi-color picture of the humanity. In 1915, Poland was not yet on the maps, its territory was still divided between the three partitioners. Europe was experiencing a nightmare of World War I, also known as the Great War, because hardly anyone could think of the scale of conflict in the modern world. The fictionalized historical document is devoted to German attacks with chemical weapons over Rawka and Bzura. The originator and implementer of the concept of using combat gases was a scientist and Nobel Prize winner Fritz Haber.

A provincial policeman moves to the capital to join the Montfermeil Anti-Crime Brigade. He discovers spheres of influence, full of constant tension, divided among gangs. Vibrating, tight shots follow the clashes between groups. Loneliness in two – a strange, ambiguous relationship that links the travelling showman and strongman Zampano (Anthony Quinn) and his helper, simple-minded, honest and naive Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina), sold to Zampano by her family. They wander together to perform on village squares: Zampano breaks the chains on his chest and Gelsomina accompanies the shows and collects donations. A wise, beautiful film, a masterpiece! “La strada” has influenced and continues to influence many filmmakers and audiences around the world in an unprecedented way. Innovative at the time of the premiere – Fellini abandoned Italian neo-Realism and stops asking questions about the world order in the social dimension. Using magical realism, symbols and metaphors, he seeks the meaning of life that people give to their existence.

The family story told in the film is set in a specific political and social context – in 2011, seven months after the revolution in Tunisia. During the holidays, 11-year-old Aziz is seriously injured by a terrorist ambush. A liver transplant is the boy’s only chance to rescue. The results of the hospital’s tests will reveal a hidden family secret. Far from moral judgment or condemnation, Barsaoui shows the clash of modernity and tradition, the redefinition of the concepts of paternity and motherhood, the evolution of social roles and, in the human dimension, the issues of second chance and forgiveness.

The 20th century was a period of two great totalitarian systems, whose murderous actions cost lives millions of victims. Just as Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany are still the embodiment of evil to this day, the cruelty of the Stalinist period escape of the general awareness. Only the Ukrainian Holodomor – the Great Famine of the 1930s. cost the lives of four to five million people. A young, idealistic but also full of doubts Welsh journalist Gareth Jones sets off for the USSR to see for himself the course and results of the great processes of economic and social change in the Soviet Union. He is entering into next circles of hell, and his publications are unheard of neither in the UK nor in the world. Based on the findings of Jones’ journalistic investigation, the allegorical “Animal Farm” by Georg Orwell was written.

Big Animal was meant to be the feature debut of excellent director Krzysztof Kieślowski. However, during the communist era in Poland, there was no permission for such a film. The script found after Kieślowski’s death was developed by Jerzy Stuhr, who directed and played the main role in “Big Animal”. The result is a poetic, metaphorical film that deals with the issue of tolerance, otherness and even love for one’s neighbour. The hero, a bank clerk, together with his wife, a kindergarten teacher, take care of an abandoned camel. They are raising the opposition of the whole town and alone they are facing increasingly bizarre accusations against the animal.

Usually, the worlds of father and mother vary, but sometimes the differences between them are amazing. Three siblings, raised in Paris, in a bourgeois house of an Orthodox mother with Russian roots, are unexpectedly sent to their father. Now Carlo, an out-of-the-box, broke and barely viable himself Italian, faces the challenges of parenthood. The clash of worldviews and explosions of emotions, but also the whole spectrum of feelings will accompany them during the holiday break at the beach house.

In contemporary Iran, killing is institutionalized, the death penalty remains in place and responsibility for the execution is spread over many people. But that doesn’t make the title evil disappear. Rasoulof tells four stories, connected by a common denominator – a mystery and a tough choice. The stories of four very different characters and the decisions they have to make are an important statement by the Iranian director against the death penalty. The silent dramas make up a powerful morality play about the limits of freedom and the consequences of choice. Film was awarded Golden Berlin Bear in 2020.

Miloš Forman. Anxious and fighting for his reasons, tirelessly seeking for freedom, both artistic and individual. A champion of the Czechoslovakian New Wave, after his emigration in 1968 he made outstanding films in the USA, including the Oscar-winning “Flight over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. Jakub Hejna and Helena Třeštíková looked through more than a hundred archival materials, many of which had not been published before, and they made a story of Forman’s life, full of twists and turns, of his courage and talents. The narrator is the director’s son, theatre actor Petr Forman.

Brittany, 1770. A part of the dowry of the rich noblewoman Heloise is her portrait. But it has to be painted in secret from its heroine. She also does not know the details of her own planned marriage. An emancipated painter Marianne, who is supposed to pretend to be her lady for company, is hired to create the portrait. Stormy, flamboyant, painterly images. Hidden emotions, which explode with full strength. The protagonists of the film are challenging their times. The director does not give clear answers, what can be first taken as a melodrama turns out to be a full of tension thriller and switching points of view reveal further concepts.
