Loneliness in two – a strange, ambiguous relationship that links the travelling showman and strongman Zampano (Anthony Quinn) and his helper, simple-minded, honest and naive Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina), sold to Zampano by her family. They wander together to perform on village squares: Zampano breaks the chains on his chest and Gelsomina accompanies the shows and collects donations.
